Sollerö school grades 5 and 6 had church boat rowing on the schedule on Friday (May 26).
“It is a follow-up to the “Mora Rowing Challenge,” says Anneli Birkeholm, who led the exercise together with “altmeister” Jean Martell.
At Lerön there was a full storm blowing from the northwest. The program had to be changed due to the weather and instead of trying out rowing a church boat, the students were given a tour of the church boat and looked at the other competition boats in the boathouses.
The students learned the technique of “Legs – Back – Arms” and then a fierce battle with rowing machines awaited between the classes. The goal was to row as far as possible in 20 minutes. Everyone joined in and rowed, cheering and cheering on their classmates.
Class 5 pulled away at the start but class 6 caught up and eventually won by a margin of 38 meters. What is impressive is that the classes rowed almost 4 km each in 20 minutes!
At the end there was coffee, bananas and a medal ceremony!
