One of the Parish Association's working groups is "Sustainable Sollerön" which is passionate about the possibilities of living in harmony with nature in our beautiful countryside. The group's activities have been paused for the past year due to the pandemic and are now being revived when/if restrictions ease.
Sustainability is more relevant than ever. Both globally, nationally and locally. The latest example here in our area is that 5 Dala municipalities – Mora, Orsa, Älvdalen, Malung-Sälen and Vansbro – are making a joint procurement for food. They prioritize sustainability with local produce, short transport, jobs, vibrant countryside and open landscapes. How do we relate to sustainability here in the parish? Solleröbladet meets Kalle Zander and Lotta and Benke Lindkvist in their greenhouse in Kråkkan for a conversation about sustainability. This is how the discussion went:
The older generations here in the parish took care of everything. The word recycling had not been invented, but people acted accordingly. They repaired clothes so that they could be used again and again. Leftover food was given to the animals in the “barn”. People helped each other with chores in the fields or in the forest. Food was purchased in the parish shops and there was little packaging that needed to be sorted. The old concept that “it was better in the past” might be true for sustainability?
Today, the welfare society brings both good and less good things from a sustainability perspective. Overconsumption has led to more “throwaway” in society. Nature is being put to the test. This means greater responsibility on all of us to think sustainably. How should we act? Of course with a pinch of common sense, but then there is also a great need for information. And here the working group sees opportunities to fill that need.
We have a recycling station and recycling center Klippen at Koopen. We have the "cream of the crop" for one of Sweden's best recycling centers in Vinäs. So there is no reason to dump garbage and scrap in the forest or throw aluminum cans in the ditch.
How can the individual act more sustainably today and contribute to a more harmonious environment tomorrow?
Start by thinking locally. Shop locally, refuel locally, collaborate locally and hire local companies. Expect the working group to inform and advise us on how we can act sustainably in many areas. The goal is that the region continues to be a sustainable paradise.
