Many people wonder how the moose hunting on the island went. Here is the answer signed by Rolle Danielsson!
“This year there was a little more interest than before,” says Rolle. “There were 15 of us hunters who showed up during the weekend of October 22-23. The hunting area was along the west side of Sollerön from Sundet down to Kulåra.
Signs that say "hunting is in progress" urged road users to exercise caution and ease off the gas pedal. We say thank you and hope that everyone continues to respect this for everyone's safety. Not least for dogs and road users themselves.
During the hunting weekend we killed 2 bulls which gave 246 kg of meat to Sollerö school. The moose population on Sollerön amounts to 10 – 15 individuals. The moose get to Sollerön via the Strait where it is shallow. In winter they step over onto the ice.
When the snow falls, we will take a more accurate inventory of the population. The goal of wildlife management is to build a stable and viable population on the island. That is why we are protecting all moose cows. Depending on what the inventory reveals, we may hunt a couple of calves later on, because we are allowed to hunt until January.
A month ago, a hunter had an exciting experience below Sollerö Macken when two large bull moose – 8 and 12 antlers respectively – clashed with their antler crowns in a fight. There is also said to be a 16-antler on the island,” concludes Rolle Danielsson.
